In June 2009, European elections will enable over 500 million citizens in
the European Union (EU) to vote for a new European Parliament.

Among European Chinese, participation in and knowledge about EU politics is limited. Language barriers and a relatively isolated social position have led to a lack of information on social and political systems and structures.
Consequently, active participation in civil society and the democratic state are hardly found among the European Chinese community.

To stimulate European Chinese initiatives, we would like to invite representatives of Chinese organizations in the European Union to attend the symposium ‘Chinese vote for Europe’ for Chinese in the EU member states.

In two days, experts will provide participants with a general overview of the EU, the role of the European Parliament, and the impact of EU politics on the Chinese community. Emphasis will be on the 2009 European parliament elections. Furthermore, the symposium is the starting point of an EU platform to share and exchange your experiences on social and political participation, and stimulating political awareness in your country. Offering a mix of lectures, workshops, and network sessions, ‘Vote for Europe’ will give you tools to spread the lessons learnt to others in your country.

This symposium is organised by three non-profit organizations that assist Dutch Chinese citizens in developing civil competences and stimulate social and political participation in society: The Chinese Political Integration & Participation Foundation (CPIPF), the National Federation of Chinese Overseas Organisations Netherlands (LFCON), and Inspraakorgaan Chinezen (IOC).

The seminar ‘Vote for Europe’ will be held at the World Forum in The Hague (Churchillplein 10), The Netherlands, on 20-21 April 2009.

The registration fee for participants from the Netherlands is 50 EUR, for students it will be 25 EUR, including lunch and dinner on 20th and 21st of April and the bus fee for transport.

For more information please email to info@chinesevoteforeu.eu. The registration deadline is 31 March 2009.
